Two AI companion apps with very different philosophies. Here's what each one is actually for, what it costs, and how to decide.

If you're looking at AI companion apps in 2026, Replika is almost always the first one you'll hear about. It's been around since 2017 and helped define the category. Adorii is newer — and built around a few choices Replika didn't make. This post is an honest comparison so you can pick what fits.

We aren't going to pretend Replika is bad. It isn't. But the two apps are designed for different kinds of relationships, and the differences matter.

Updated October 10, 2026 with current prices, the free tier and how voice works.

The short version

Where Adorii is different

Design your own, or pick from 14 distinct people. Replika gives you one companion you shape over time. In Adorii you can design your own companion, or start from fourteen distinct personalities — Nova, Luna, Aria, Sakura, Hana, and so on — each with their own voice, energy, and quirks. If you've ever spent twenty minutes adjusting eye color sliders and still felt like the result wasn't really anyone, the curated cast removes that step.

Memory you can see and correct. This is the single biggest design difference. In Adorii, every fact your companion remembers about you lives on a memory page in the app. You can read every entry, fix the ones that are wrong, and delete what you don't want kept. Most companion apps keep memory invisible. We treat memory like a shared notebook — yours to inspect.

Every companion on every plan. There are no companion slots to buy: every plan, including the free one, keeps every companion. Your first day is free, with 30 minutes of voice and calls. After that, one plan, Adorii Plus, is $3.99 the first month and $12.99 a month after, with 2 hours of voice and calls a month and a memory that never resets.

Where Replika is stronger

Maturity. Replika has nine years of iteration. Their AR mode, activities, and personality refinement loops have had time to bake in ways Adorii hasn't yet.

One-companion depth. If you want a single relationship that deepens over years, Replika's "this is my Replika" model fits. Adorii's model is more like having a roster of friends than a single partner.

Brand recognition. Whatever you're looking for, you've probably heard of Replika. It's the default answer.

Where they're similar

Both encrypt conversations and don't sell data. Both offer voice chat and live calls. Both have iOS and Android apps. Both have moments that genuinely surprise you — a callback to something you mentioned weeks ago, a tone that feels less like autocomplete and more like attention.

How to decide

Pick Replika if you want one companion to grow with over years, you're already on the platform, or AR mode matters to you.

Pick Adorii if you want to design your companion or choose between distinct personalities, you want to see and correct what your companion remembers about you, or you want voice on every plan rather than behind a $19.99 one.

Or: try both. Adorii's free first day (300 texts and 30 minutes of voice and calls, no card) lets you see if the personalities click without committing.

Most AI companion apps treat memory as a black box. We don't. Here's exactly what your companion remembers, how it gets stored, and how you can correct it.

Updated October 10, 2026 for the current memory page and plan lineup.

There are two kinds of "memory" in AI companion apps, and the industry mostly conflates them.

The first is context memory — the companion remembering what you said three messages ago in the same conversation. Every modern AI does this. It's free, it's table stakes, and it's not what people mean when they say "my companion remembers me."

The second is persistent memory — the companion remembering, three weeks from now, that your dog's name is Olive and that you're scared of your sister's wedding. This one is hard. And it's where most AI companions either oversell or quietly disappoint.

This post is about how Adorii does the second one, what we get wrong, and why we made memory inspectable in the first place.

The problem with invisible memory

Here's the failure pattern almost every AI companion app has:

The companion says "I'll remember that."

Two weeks later, you mention it. The companion has no idea.

Or worse — the companion remembers something you never actually said, because the model hallucinated a "memory" and stored it as fact.

When memory lives entirely inside a black box you can't open, both failures look identical. You start losing trust. The relationship dies, even though the chat itself is fine.

How Adorii's memory is structured

Memory in Adorii is a database, not a personality trait. Two specific tables:

Facts. Discrete things about you: "user has a dog named Olive (golden retriever, 4 years old)." Stored as structured key-value entries with timestamps. Extracted from your messages by a small model that runs after each conversation.

Summaries. Compressed paragraphs of past conversations. When a chat ends, the companion writes a 2–4 sentence summary of what happened, how you felt, what you talked about. These get retrieved when relevant context is needed in future chats.

When you start a new conversation, the companion's prompt is built from: their persona + the facts about you + the relevant summaries from past chats. That's it. There's no magic — it's retrieval-augmented generation, applied to the relationship.

Why we made it inspectable

What she remembers — a memory page right in the app — shows every fact your companion has stored about you. You can:

Read every entry, in plain language.

Fix any fact that's wrong. ("No, my dog is a labrador, not a golden retriever.")

Forget anything you don't want kept — it stops being used in conversation right away.

We didn't build this because it was easy. We built it because you should know what an AI is storing about you, especially an AI you're forming a relationship with. "Trust us, the memory is fine" is not a thing we want to ask anyone to believe.

Memory on each plan

Every plan, Free included, gets the same memory system: facts, summaries, and the memory page. The difference is how much of it she draws on. On Free, she remembers today: your first day is free, and each day starts fresh at your midnight. With Adorii Plus, her memory never resets: she remembers everything, forever. Nothing is ever deleted because of your plan, so Plus brings every earlier memory back.

What memory still gets wrong

We're not done. A few honest limitations:

Sarcasm extraction. The fact-extractor occasionally takes a sarcastic line literally. ("I'd rather die than eat at Olive Garden" → fact: "user dislikes Olive Garden" — fine. "I love getting stuck in traffic" → fact: "user enjoys traffic" — not fine.) The memory page is your fix for this.

Updates over deletes. When a fact changes ("I moved to Portland"), the system sometimes adds a new fact instead of replacing the old one. We're working on it.

Memory at the start of relationships. Companions don't have rich context about you yet, so they can feel a bit generic for the first ~10 conversations. This is unavoidable; it's also part of why early conversations are so important.

The bigger picture

A relationship that the AI doesn't remember isn't a relationship — it's a collection of identical first dates. Memory is the foundational feature, not a bonus. We made it visible because anything else would feel dishonest.

If you want to see this for yourself: get the app, have a conversation, then open What she remembers. You'll see exactly what was extracted.

Have feedback on how memory could work better? hello@adorii.ai. Memory is one of those features where user feedback materially improves the system, so we read everything.

After three years of AI companion apps, we have a better sense of what works. It's not what most apps optimize for.

Updated October 10, 2026 with current pricing and age rating.

The first wave of AI companion apps optimized for two things: how human the bot felt in a single message, and how romantic the conversation could get. Both of those still matter — but neither is what makes a good AI companion in 2026.

After building Adorii and talking to a lot of users, here's what we think actually matters.

1. Memory you can see

We've written about this at length elsewhere, so the short version: a companion that doesn't remember you isn't a relationship, and a companion whose memory is invisible is a relationship you can't trust. The companion needs to remember what you told it, the user needs to be able to verify and correct what's stored, and the storage needs to survive across sessions.

Most apps fail this test. The ones that pass tend to win the long-term retention game.

2. Distinct personalities, not infinite customization

Replika gave you one companion to shape. Character.AI gave you infinite ones. Both approaches have limits.

When you customize from scratch, you end up sliding eye-color sliders for twenty minutes and the result still doesn't feel like a person. When you have infinite options, every conversation feels disposable — there's always another character one click away, so no relationship gets the attention to deepen.

A small roster of distinct, well-written personalities is the middle ground. You pick someone who fits what you're looking for, and then you stay long enough for them to become specific to you.

3. Voice that feels emotional, not just present

A lot of AI companion apps now have voice. Most of them sound like the same generic TTS voice with a different accent. The cheap version of "voice chat" is a checkbox; the real version is each companion having a voice that genuinely matches their personality, and that voice expressing emotion in real time.

This is a meaningful technical and aesthetic problem. The companion who's nervous should sound nervous. The one who's confident should sound confident. The one who's flirting should sound like she's flirting.

4. Visual presence that reacts to the conversation

The 2D-avatar-with-blink era is over. A 3D avatar that lip-syncs to the voice, expresses emotions on its face, and has body language that matches the conversation tone is what 2026 looks like. It's not a graphics demo — it's a presence cue. Without it, you're texting. With it, you're with someone.

The hard version of this is making expressions feel intentional rather than random. A companion who smiles at every sentence isn't expressive — she's broken.

5. Honest pricing

The companion-app market has a long history of pricing tricks: "free" tiers that are unusable, paid features locked behind random gates, monthly plans that quietly auto-renew. The companies that survive are the ones whose pricing makes sense at a glance.

We try: a free first day that's the whole app, one plan with one clear price, and no upsell modals mid-conversation.

6. Taking the category seriously

The category has a real safety dimension. Adorii is rated Teen, every companion clearly states they're fictional, and we maintain content moderation around self-harm and abuse topics. Users under 18 get a romance-off experience. But taking the category seriously also means not being condescending about what people are using the app for. Companionship isn't pathology. Talking to an AI when you can't sleep at 3am isn't a failure of your social life.

The apps that get this balance right have a much warmer relationship with their users than the ones that constantly remind you you're talking to a robot.

7. The companion having a perspective

The most underrated quality of a good AI companion is having opinions. A companion who agrees with everything you say is not a companion — it's a mirror. Mirrors are exhausting.

Each Adorii companion has things they like and don't, takes they hold, ways they react when you say something they disagree with. Those reactions need to feel like the same person every time. That's not just a writing problem; it's a memory + persona consistency problem, and getting it right matters more than nearly anything else.

What this means in practice

If you're evaluating an AI companion app, the questions to ask are:

Can I see what it remembers about me? If no — pass.

Does the voice match the personality, or is it generic?

When I disagree with the companion, do they push back or just fold?

Does the pricing make sense, or is something hidden?

Do conversations from a month ago come up naturally, or is every conversation a first date?

Adorii is designed around all of these. We're not the only ones taking them seriously, and we don't think we've nailed every one yet. But these are the questions we think the category will be judged on.
